If you like watching poker on TV, you aren't alone. Often, though, it can be a bit confusing. For example, you might hear the word "loose" used to describe a player. Now, in normal terms, loose tends to mean someone with a lot of dates. In poker terms, though, it means something completely different.
A loose poker player is one who isn't afraid to get involved in a lot of pots. At least, that's how that person views themselves. Other players may view that player as a bit reckless and call them a bit of a loose cannon.
The nice thing for a loose player is that they get the chance to potentially win a lot of poker pots. The problem, though, is that they're also giving themselves more chances to lose a lot more chips at the poker tables. So, being a loose player comes with many risks.
Most players only play loose poker for one of three reasons. Either they're new to the game and don't know better, they're experienced and feel that they can get away with it, or they don't have enough chips left or are upset over a bad beat and get desperate to turn things around.
So, if you plan to play poker now or ever, remember the meaning of loose play. If you want to try it, be prepared for the possible benefits and risks involved. Playing loose could give you a win at the tables or it could send you packing in a hurry.
